The principal investigator of IrsiCaixa, Roger Paredes, joins as the medical coordinator of the curriculum for the new Medicine degree at UPC

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC) has appointed the principal investigator of IrsiCaixa, Roger Paredes, as the medical coordinator of the curriculum for the new Medicine degree at the university, which will start in the 2026-2027 academic year
Roger Paredes, principal investigator at IrsiCaixa, head of the Infectious Diseases Service at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, and scientific director of the Fight Infections Foundation, has been named medical coordinator for the new Medicine degree at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC). This degree, starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, aims to integrate technological innovation into medical training and will have the Hospital Universitari de Terrassa as a reference center for clinical training.
Paredes is a leading figure in HIV and gut microbiome research, areas in which he has led several international projects. His career includes pioneering research on HIV drug resistance and the coordination of clinical trials on COVID-19. In this new role, he will help design a curriculum that combines biomedical research, practical training, and an advanced technological vision to prepare doctors capable of addressing the current challenges of global health.
The Medicine degree at UPC will initially be taught at the Faculty of Optics and Optometry in Terrassa, which will be transformed into the Faculty of Health Sciences. The academic program will last six years and will be based on innovative teaching methodologies, promoting research, internationalization, and the integration of new technologies into medical practice.
With this addition, IrsiCaixa strengthens its commitment to the training of future healthcare professionals and to the transfer of scientific knowledge to the academic and healthcare fields.
