Can Ruti holds its first conference to discuss and propose improvements on the role of women in science
The event, which coincides with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, is organised by the Women in Science working group of the Can Ruti Campus. It includes the signing of a declaration of intentions by the heads of the centres on the Campus, based on the United Nations guidelines to promote equal opportunities and the projection of women's scientific careers.
On February 11, the Campus' researchers will have a meeting to debate gender issues in the world of research on the first symposium to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. "One day will not be enough to tackle all the levels of this issue, but the work group will be organising a debate at all levels in our institutions and celebrating this day by putting the issue on the table", explains Nuria Izquierdo-Useros, a member of the Women in Science Work Group at the Can Ruti Campus and a researcher at the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute, the promoters of the event.
The conference, which will be held from 9:30 am to 1 pm, will begin with a presentation by the Women in Science Working Group, led by Dr. Julia García-Prado, principal researcher at IrsiCaixa and Scientific Director of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP). This will be followed by a master conference on gender equality in the research and innovation sectors, a journal club and a round table discussion with invited experts from other centres. Signing a Declaration of Intent
The event will also serve to formalise the intentions of the various institutions on the Campus with a commitment from the management, by signing a Declaration of Intent. The document will be signed by the directors of the Campus centres: Dr Bonaventura Clotet, director of IrsiCaixa; Dr Manel Puig, director of the IGTP; Dr Manel Esteller, elected director of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC); Dr Jordi Casabona, director of the Centre for Epidemiological Studies on Sexually Transmitted Infections and AIDS in Catalonia (CEEISCAT); Dr. Antonio Dávalos, director of the Germans Trias Hospital; and Dr. Jordi Ahora, manager of the Northern Metropolitan Area of the ICS. The letter has six key points and is based on the recommendations of the United Nations.
